Spotted black snake

Pseudechis gutattus

highly venomous

Snake bites from this species is considered very dangerous, if bitten seek urgent medical attention. 

Description

Body moderately robust.  Head not noticeably distinct from neck. Colour very variable from jet black to grey and sometimes pale brown. Mid body scales are 17 rows.

habitat

Diurnal to nocturnal. Lives in dry woodland, savannah, grassland, brigalow and agricultural land.

Diet

Feeds on small mammals, frogs, lizards and other snakes.

Distribution

NSW and QLD almost exclusively west of the Great Dividing Range.
