Rough-scaled snake

Tropidechis carinatus

highly venomous

This snake has relatively large fangs and will readily bite if harassed. If anyone is suspected of been bitten, urgent medical attention will be needed. 

Description

Body moderate. Relatively broad head distinct from neck. Dorsal scales strongly keeled. Top of body brown to grey, occasionally with greenish wash. Mid body scales are 23 rows.

habitat

Nocturnal. Lives in closed forests, wallum swamps and wetlands.

Diet

Feeds on small mammals, frogs, tadpoles, small lizards and occasionally birds.

Distribution

Distributed over two populations: Southern population from Gosford, NSW, to Fraser Island, Qld. Northern population inhabits wet tropics region of north Qld.
