Keelback or fresh water snake

This snake is not considered dangerous to humans and is generally reluctant to bite. If bitten please treat with first aid. 

Description

Body moderate. Head is slightly distinct from neck. Colour is grey , olive brown , reddish brown or yellow. Many dorsal scales keeled, giving it its name. Distinguished from the rough scale snake by having a loreal scale and corners of mouth upturned, giving it a smile appearance. Mid body scales in 15 rows.

habitat

Diurnal and nocturnal depending on temperature. Lives in forests and along waterways in savannah, swamps and floodplains. Common in gardens in urban areas.

Diet

Frogs, lizards, fish and is the only known snake in Australia to eat small cane toads with little ill effect, although consuming larger ones may take a toll on the snakes physiology to metabolize the toads toxins.

Distribution

Across northern and eastern Australia from Kimberley, WA , to Grafton, NSW. Also lives in PNG and parts of Indonesia.
