Coastal taipan

Oxyuranus scutellatus

highly venomous

Considered the largest venomous snake in Australia in length and the one with the longest fangs, this species can bite multiple times and is considered the third most venomous snake in the world after the Inland Taipan and Eastern Brown. If a bite occurs seek urgent medical attention. 

Description

Body moderate to slender. Large long head with angular brow and is distinct from head. Very variable in colour , top of body can be shade of brown, grey, black or yellow. Mid body scales are 21-23 rows.  

habitat

Usually diurnal but in warm weather can become nocturnal. Lives in dry forests, grassland, savannah, open woodland , heaths and rainforests verges.

Diet

Feeds on small mammals and occasionally birds.

Distribution

From Qld/NSW border east coast region to northern coastline into Kimberly region, WA.
