HIGHLY VENOMOUS

Considered the second most venomous land snake in the world. The Eastern Brown snake is responsible for the most human fatalities in Australia over all other snakes, this is due to the fact that they are commonly encountered along the east coast and are well adapted to living in agricultural land and suburbs. 

Description

Body moderately slender , head not noticeably distinct from head. Highly variable in colour from pale cream to black.  Usually a shade of brown with or without dark bands. Juveniles have a black head and black band on nape and some completely banded.  Mid body scales in 17 rows.

habitat

Diurnal to nocturnal, depending on temperature. Inhabits woodlands, grasslands, deserts and well adapted to urban and agricultural areas.

Diet

Feeds on mammals, birds, reptiles and frogs.

Distribution

Eastern Australia including all of NSW, most of VIC and QLD, and south-eastern SA. Some isolated populations in NT and WA. Also, southern PNG and Indonesia.
