SNAKE FIRST AID
In the rare event that a snake bite has occurred there is a few basic snake first aid steps you can follow for mitigating symptoms and increase chances of survival until first responders arrive.
- Manage Danger
- Make sure you are at a safe distance from snake, assume any snake is venomous until it is identified
- Stop and drop
- Sit or lie the victim down and remain calm
- Victim should remain still
- Apply pressure bandage
- Remove jewelry/bracelet/watch from affected limb
- Consider applying gauze dressing to bite site
- Start bandage from extremity
- Leave fingertips/toes exposed to monitor circulation
- Do not remove clothing. Bandage over or cut it away.
- Immobilise
- Splint the limb without unnecessary movement of the victim
- Pad between legs with clothing/blanket
- Use other leg as splint-tie at angles and knees
- Monitor and reassure the victim
- Tell the victim that correct first aid measures are in place and that they will be OK
- If the victim is semi-conscious or vomiting, gently roll them onto their side (recovery position) to prevent inhalation of vomit or saliva
- Monitor unconscious victim and commence resuscitation if beathing ceases
- Seek medical assistance

- Do not allow victim to move
THINGS YOU SHOULD NOT DO
- Do not attempt to kill the snake.
- Do not apply a tourniquet.
- Do not cut, suck or wash the bite.
- Do not apply chemicals or antiseptics.
- Do not give medications or alcohol.
- Do not remove bandages. They must be removed at hospital.
