COMMON DEATH ADDER 

Acanthophis antacticus

highly venomous

Death adders are ambush predators and will wait under leaf cover for their prey. They are extremely fast when striking but slow to move in general. Bites from this species of snake have been fatal and any bite should be immediately treated with first aid. 

Description

Robust body going down to a very thin tail, reddish brown to charcoal grey colour, with lighter cross-bands. The distictive tail tip is white, yellow or black. Mid body scales in 21-23 rows.

habitat

Mainly nocturnal and found in dry forests, rain forest margins and grasslands. Settles down in leaf litter to ambush potential prey to lure with its tail.

Diet

Feeds mainly on small mammals and birds but will also consume reptiles and frogs. 

Distribution

Southern WA, along southern coast to SA, and most of NSW into north-east QLD.
